Accounting Degree Programs

Major in Accounting and Information Systems at Santa Clara University
Beginning in 2007, SCU is offering a major in Accounting and Information Systems for students in the Leavey School of Business.

This new program will focus on use of computer information systems and analytical decision-making methods in relation to accounting. Students will build skills in designing, implementing, and evaluating today’s business accounting systems.

While the IAU criteria for granting a degree in particular are the same as using the vast majority of institutions of higher learning, our practice of granting credits taking into account the “life experiences” of the student has already won acceptance of the academic community in recent years.

Development of curricula and agendas
IAU in the development of curricula and agendas is a joint activity between the student and academic advisor. The program for each student is unique and is being developed as a result of joint efforts of students, staff and academic adviser. The director who oversees academic advisors has a doctorate in education with a specialty in designing curricula and programs. The student’s academic advisor works directly with the supervisor to set its agenda (Areas of study).

Review and evaluation
After the review and appraisal of academic, experiential and professional students, the Academic Committee defines its academic status. This definition establishes the approximate number of credit hours that the university will give the student to carry out the program. The student’s academic status is subject to change based on the results of the course curriculum and research, which is the target of one of the orientation courses (C & C).

Selection process of course, Orientation course curriculum (C & C)
To meet the requirements of the current C & C, the student conducts research (using the Internet or other approved sources) to find and select courses of at least 2 universities recognized by AIU, which offer the same grade level and discipline that the degree program appointed to the student.
The student will choose courses based on their need to learn and master the objectives defined in the description of the course, broken down into the catalogs of the recognized institutions. The student will be the first referee selected courses and develop an agenda that is sufficient to meet the required credit hours, as defined in the report of their academic status above.
The culmination of the ongoing investigation of C & C is the meeting with the academic advisor. During this meeting, will be established and approved courses and programs.

Entrance Requirements
Students who have been accepted for admission into the College are eligible to matriculate into any degree program sponsored by the Business and Information Technology Department. Accounting students will benefit from having a good math background including high school algebra and other advanced math classes.

Scheduling
All new students will initially register through the Academic Advising Office of the College. After the initial registration process, students will be assigned an academic advisor in the Department. Schedules in semesters subsequent to the first semester will be completed in conjunction with the assigned academic advisor.

Division of Business Mission Statement: Believing in the power of truth, the division is committed to developing students who are grounded in the liberal arts and Dominican traditions. Upon graduation, the students will have the ability to think critically, logically, and ethically while applying the specialized business knowledge and skills mastered here to respond effectively to the rapidly evolving demands of our communities and organizations in the global economy.

The program is designed to provide students with the opportunity to develop an appropriate mindset and a value based reasoning system as deemed necessary for entry-level accounting positions or for entry into graduate studies. The major will fulfill the minimum requirements for the CMA/CFM exams. A student wishing to apply for the Uniform CPA exam will need to meet the 150-hour professional program requirement of the examination board. Students must consult with their academic advisor if they are interested in completing the 150-hour professional program. All of the accounting courses are designed to enhance the students’ knowledge, skills, and abilities related to the University core competencies of reasoning, communication, collaboration, reflectivity, and information technology.

Minor in Accounting
(For NonAccounting Majors)

The minor in Accounting is designed to serve nonaccounting majors who are interested in supplementing their major with an accounting dimension. A minimum of 12 hours must be taken at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi. For additional information, contact the academic advisor in the College of Business.

Students in this curriculum are prepared for entrylevel jobs in the area of bookkeeping. Most students will secure jobs in small and medium sized firms. This is a one-year program and students should be aware that more education and/or training may be required for entry-level employment. Should students desire to pursue an Accounting Specialist degree, the courses in this certificate program will apply towards the Associate in Applied Science Degree in Accounting. Students should always consult an Academic Advisor before registering to take the courses.

Courses in this program prepare the students to transfer to a four-year institution and earn a baccalaureate degree in accounting. Basic business courses include accounting, economics, business law, and statistics. Job opportunities for accountants, after the receipt of a four-year degree or more, have been very strong in the past and are likely to grow. Jobs can be secured in all levels of government, in industry, and in both public and private accounting. A CPA or CMA certification is encouraged for those who wish to advance in the field. Students seeking a one or two-year degree in Accounting should see the Career Program listings for Accounting. Students should always consult with an academic advisor before enrolling.

The Bachelor of Accounting program is offered online via distance learning. After evaluating both academic record and life experience, AIU staff working in conjunction with Faculty and Academic Advisors will assist students in setting up a custom-made program, designed on an individual basis. This flexibility to meet student needs is seldom found in other distance learning programs. Our online program does not require all students to take the same subjects/courses, use the same books, or learning materials. Instead, the online Bachelor of Accounting curriculum is designed individually by the student and academic advisor. It specifically addresses strengths and weaknesses with respect to market opportunities in the student’s major and intended field of work. Understanding that industry and geographic factors should influence the content of the curriculum instead of a standardized one-fits-all design is the hallmark of AIU’s unique approach to adult education. This philosophy addresses the dynamic and constantly changing environment of working professionals by helping adult students in reaching their professional and personal goals within the scope of the degree program.
