Accounting Degree Programs

A degree in Accounting offers a firm base either for further academic study or for taking the final examinations of the main professional bodies. It is recognised by the accounting profession, industry, commerce and the public sector and attracts students of the very highest calibre. As a result, our graduates are in great demand.

Queen’s has traditionally provided a high proportion of graduate entrants to the accounting profession in Northern Ireland, whether working in professional offices, as management accountants in industry or as accountants and auditors in the public sector. These and many other opportunities are also available at national and international level.

Graduates who have taken a degree in Accounting with another subject have additional opportunities relevant to that subject. The Accounting and Information Systems pathway is suitable for students who wish to pursue careers as consultants in either Accountancy or Information Systems in both public and private sectors.

Other potential areas of work are: managing and leading IT outsourcing contracts and service level agreements with a range of organisations in other countries; evaluation of information systems, including web services and e-commerce.

Entrance Requirements
Accounting: AAB or ABB + A (AS-level) + GCSE Mathematics grade B.

Accounting and Information Systems: AAB or ABB + A (AS-level) + GCSE Mathematics grade B.

Accounting with a Modern Language: AAB or ABB + A (AS-level) + GCSE Mathematics grade B, incl. French/German/ Spanish depending on the chosen language. Non A-level Spanish students can take up Spanish if they have a B at GCSE in another modern language.

The Subject

Accounting as a discipline is concerned with the provision of economic information to various users both internal and external to organisations.

The undergraduate courses are designed primarily for students who intend to enter the accounting profession and as such contain considerable practical content, as well as essential theory in the various specialisations of Financial Accounting, Management Accounting, Auditing, Taxation and Finance.

Students taking Accounting with a Modern Language will take two core language modules in each year instead of some of these modules.

Special Features

The degrees in Accounting have in the past attracted the maximum exemptions available to any undergraduate programme from the examinations of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Ireland, subject to obtaining lower second class honours or better and obtaining a minimum mark in specified modules. ICAI is currently reviewing its syllabus and future exemptions have not yet been agreed.

Exemptions are also available from the examinations of ICAS, CIMA, ACCA and CIPFA. The Joint Honours degrees give partial exemptions from ICAI for the accounting modules taken.

The Early Enrollment Program provides high school students with an opportunity to take college-level courses in the familiar environment of their own high school. The program is open to college-bound seniors and accelerated juniors. Course credit will count toward high school graduation and toward a college degree at Rhode Island College. Credit may also be transferred to another institution of higher learning. Faculty for the program are drawn from qualified teachers at participating high schools. The Accounting and Information Systems Department certifies credits for Accounting 201, Principles of Financial Accounting and Accounting 202, Principles of Managerial Accounting for courses taught by approved faculty in participating high schools.

Ph.D. Program in Business with a major in Accounting and Information Systems at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University

Ph.D. Program in Business with a major in Accounting and Information Systems, where we seek to
Prepare students for academic careers in research and teaching.

The Department of Accounting and Information Systems prepares students to become professionals in their chosen area of accounting and information systems. Faculty members in the department have chosen to specialize in selected areas of accounting or information systems and they teach and conduct research in these areas. All faculty members at the professorial ranks have Ph.D.s in accounting or information systems appropriate to the courses they teach, and many have professional certification in their areas of specialization. This faculty is committed to the education of accounting and information systems professionals who will be active participants in this information age.

The department’s undergraduate program offers three options: Accounting (ACCT), Accounting Information Systems Audit (ISA), and Information Systems (ISO). These options are designed to allow students to specialize in their area of interest. Completion of the selected option prepares the student for entry level positions as professional accountants or information systems professionals who work in public accounting firms, professional service firms, industrial companies, governmental entitites, or to continue their education in graduate school. The job titles vary greatly and include auditor, information systems auditor, programmer analyst, management accountant, tax consultant, systems consultant, systems analyst, controller, and cost analyst. The demand for our graduates has been strong throughout the department’s history, and that demand is continuing.

Many graduates of our department desire to gain certification in their selected area of specialization. The Certified Public Accountant (CPA) is the best known of these certifications. Effective in 2006, students taking the CPA exam in Virginia have to meet a 150-hour requirement in order to sit for the CPA exam. The requirements for other states vary; however, most now or soon will require students to meet the 150-hour educational requirement. Students should discuss with their advisor the several options Virginia Tech provides for meeting this requirement at both the undergraduate and graduate level. In addition to the CPA exam, graduates of our programs sit for the Certificate in Management Accounting (CMA) exam, the Certified Internal Auditor (CIA) exam, the Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA) exam, and others. Students planning to take one of these exams are advised to talk to their advisor during their junior year so that they may select the electives appropriate for the selected exam.

The department encourages its students to gain “real world” experience prior to graduation through a summer internship or by participating in the Cooperative Education Program. More information about these programs is available either from the department’s faculty or Career Services.

The department also encourages interaction with accounting and information systems professionals by sponsoring three student organizations: Accounting Society; Information Systems Society; and Beta Alpha Psi, the national honorary and professional fraternity dedicated to the advancement of the accounting profession. These organizations and other campus groups provide multiple opportunities for developing leadership skills and interacting with accounting and information systems professionals.

The department encourages students to gain a global perspective of business through modules on international issues in our courses and by our participation in the college’s Global Business Concentration and study abroad programs. Our goal is to encourage our students to become well-rounded professionals who will become leaders in their chosen careers.

Lastly, the department’s over 6,000 alumni have generously contributed to a variety of scholarships for accounting and information systems majors. Each year the department awards over $180,000 in scholarships and awards to our students.

UG Accounting and Information Systems Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University

The Department of Accounting and Information Systems’ undergraduate programs are divided into three options:

These options are designed to give our students the opportunity to choose the area within accounting and information systems that is best for them. The job titles vary greatly and include auditor, information systems auditor, management accountant, tax consultant, systems consultant, systems analyst, controller, and cost accountant. The demand for our graduates has been strong throughout the department�s history and that demand is continuing.

Many graduates of our department desire to gain certification in their selected area of specialization. Undergraduate students may choose to combine accounting and information systems classes to produce broad knowledge of both areas. Students use this major most frequently to pursue employment with consulting organizations that market, implement and maintain business information systems. This major provides students with the theories and procedures of accounting along with technical knowledge of how computer systems can facilitate business processes. Students graduating with this major are prepared to obtain employment in a competitive job market, start a business, or continue their education in graduate and professional degree programs.

As business and management techniques become more complex, the management of financial resources and the provision of management information assume greater importance. In short, administrators of business, industrial and governmental organizations need staff with specific training in accounting to handle this increased complexity.

Whether utilizing handwritten books or computerized systems, the Business Administration - Accounting program at NAIT provides students with practical, specialized training that enables them to operate in business with competence. Training is balanced with managerial courses designed to provide students with sufficient knowledge and training to work in supervisory positions.

The objectives of the program are to provide the student with a good working knowledge of accounting and information systems, and to understand the accountant’s role in those systems. Accounting and information systems include familiarity with computer applications in business, understanding of quantitative analysis techniques and derivation of meaningful relationships in financial data.

This program is recommended for those who want to pursue careers in accounting, who expect to make extensive use of accounting in their jobs or who wish to use their expertise as financial managers.

Recently, new regulatory environments have required companies to provide better documentation of their accounting and IT systems to improve the management and disclosure of their business processes for better financial and regulatory controls. Accounting and IT professionals have significant roles in audit and control activities, since they control the systems that monitor and report on finance, planning and operations.

Within the accounting curriculum students can choose to add courses in information systems to complement your individual interests as well as prior education and work experiences. See the Accounting and Information Systems emphasis for details.

Graduate study
If you meet admission requirements you should consider continuing your education at the graduate level once you have completed your undergraduate work. Graduate study in accounting is receiving increasing emphasis by professional organizations and employers.

If you qualify you may petition to take one or two graduate accounting courses as electives (e.g. Special topics, ACCT6800).

The accounting program offers several 4000/6000 level courses. If you take a a 4000-level course you cannot receive credit for the corresponding 6000-level course.

You must earn a grade of C in all accounting courses to qualify for graduation.

Courses in english composition, speech, ethics and logic are desirable.

Courses in statistics and information systems, beyond the required business core courses, are highly recommended.

Many students compete 30 hours of accounting, often taking two accounting courses each semester in their junior and senior years. Plan on working closely with the accounting faculty and your business advisors in planning your program.
