Vision Statement

Our vision is to be recognized as an innovative leader in professional accounting education and to become one of the primary centers of excellence in education in Hampton Roads and beyond.

Mission Statement

Our mission within this vision is, through our teaching, service and research, to produce ethical accounting graduates who have the academic and professional base of knowledge to meet the challenges posed by a dynamic global business environment.

What is Accounting?

Accounting is the language of business, encompassing all phases of business operations as well as specialized accounting knowledge. Accounting is oriented to both preparers and users of financial information. Many organizations choose their corporate executives form the ranks of the accountant because of their broad training and expertise.

What careers are available in Accounting?

Accounting graduates have a wide variety of career choices. Private accounting or industry offers graduates a chance to pursue managerial accounting, cost accounting or internal auditing careers.

The not-for-profit sector includes federal, state and local governments; colleges and universities; heath care institutions and other such organizations.

Public accounting consists of the “Big-Four” international CPA firms, as well as national, regional, and local firms. Accountants in this area may pursue an interest in auditing, taxation, financial accounting, or systems advisory services.

What awards are available for Accounting majors?

Several awards are available for accounting majors displaying scholastic achievement, leadership abilities, and involvement in student activities. Awards are given by the Virginia Government Finance Officer’s Association, the Association of Government Accountants, the Virginia Society of CPAs, the Institute of Internal Auditors, and the Institute of Management Accountants. A number of other organizations also have scholarships available to students majoring in accounting.

A number of professional certifications are available to accounting graduates. The best known is the Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation, which gives the holder the right to practice public accounting. The American Institute of CPAs offers the CPA exam each year in early May and November. Most states also require a period of work experience in addition to the successful completion of the exam for an individual to receive certification.

The Certified Management Accountant (CMA) also requires successful completion of an exam and work experience for an individual to receive certification. The Institute of Management Accountants offers the CMA exam year round.

Other certifications include the Certified Internal Auditor, Certified Government Financial Manager, Certified Fraud Examiner, Certified Financial Manager and Certified Information Systems Auditor.

Careers in Accounting and Finance at Lancaster University

Preparing you for the job market and helping you embark on a successful career is top of our agenda in the Department of Accounting and Finance. Careers assistance is provided through a range of mechanisms:
We offer work placements at leading business organisations, turning standard three-year degrees into four-year “sandwich” programmes. In addition to providing you with valuable practical experience, work placements offer great networking opportunities and the chance to “sample” a job that interests you. (They also pay well!)

Our new Accounting, Auditing and Finance degree (NN43), in partnership with Ernst & Young UK and the Institute for Chartered Accountants of Scotland (ICAS), is specifically designed to provide a fast-track route to qualification as a professional accountant through a mixture of university modules, on-the-job experience, and professional examinations.

What are Assessment Centres?

Assessment centres often take place over one or two days, and are used by most large employers. Job applicants undertake activities designed to evaluate a range of characteristics including interpersonal skills, ingenuity, assertiveness, teamworking, leadership abilities and time management skills.

They may appear daunting, but in fact they can be a lot of fun - and you are likely to learn a lot.
Our courses aim to provide you with practical insights into management generally, and accounting and finance in particular. For example, our second-year Auditing and Accounting Information Systems course is taught by a former KPMG audit partner, while our third-year Taxation course is taught by a professional accountant/tax consultant. Courses such as Financial Statement Analysis and Strategic Management Control use real-world case studies to help explain and illustrate theoretical concepts.

A well-written and presented CV is essential if your job application is to stand any chance of progressing beyond stage one of the selection process. We therefore provide help and advice with CV writing.

Completing application forms can be a complex and time-consuming task. The Careers Service at Lancaster provides help and advice with the application process. They also provide training in interview techniques and psychometric tests, plus advice on career opportunities.

Many large organisations use assessment centres as part of their graduate recruitment programmes. These can be an intimidating proposition if you don’t know what to expect. We therefore offer training sessions in assessment centre methods led by a former partner of a leading accounting firm (with responsibility for assessment centre design).

Students are required to complete and maintain a Personal Development Plan (PDP) tracing the skills acquired and the experience gained while at Lancaster. Your PDP provides a crucial “skills library” on which to draw when applying for jobs.
